From Eyesore to Artwork

The Transformation of Dunfermline’s City Railway Station Underpass

For years, the pedestrian underpass at Dunfermline City Railway Station served as a grim introduction to our city.

Marred by years of neglect, the tunnel was frequently covered in graffiti of an offensive and sectarian nature, creating what many described as a "sorry sight" for commuters and visitors alike. However, following a dedicated eight-month collaboration between Fife Council and Fire Station Creative (FSC), that unwelcoming entrance has been officially replaced by a vibrant landmark.

A Vision of Colour and Movement

The new mural, titled The Way Through, was designed and executed by local artist Lynn Crombie. After months of preparation - which involved scraping back layers of old paint during the winter - the tunnel now features broad fields of colour and abstract block patterns designed to provide an "emotional uplift" to those passing through.

The project, which received £10,250 in funding from the City of Dunfermline area committee, was driven by the First Impressions scheme. This initiative aims to ensure that people arriving by train are met with a sense of safety and positivity rather than vandalism.

Before & After

Addressing the Critics and Ensuring Longevity

While the project has been met with widespread acclaim, it has not been without its sceptics. Concerns were raised regarding the potential return of graffiti and technical issues like peeling paint. In response, FSC Director Ian Moir has assured the public that:

  • Maintenance is a priority: There is a dedicated budget for ongoing maintenance and the removal of any future vandalism.

  • Artist commitment: Lynn Crombie has agreed to maintain the artwork for eighteen months to ensure it remains in pristine condition.

  • Smart design: The broad blocks of colour were chosen specifically because they are easy to repair should the surface be defaced.

We Want to Hear From You!

The physical work is complete, but the project’s success is measured by the experience of the community. Whether you use the underpass for your daily commute or only pass through occasionally, your feedback is essential for measuring the value of this renovation.

What do you think of the new look? Does it make you feel safer or more welcome in the city?
